Caseworkers are not looking for reasons to refuse you. They are looking for a file that answers its own questions. When a document is missing, ambiguous or contradicted by another page, the fastest safe decision is refusal — and the applicant is left reading a template letter that explains almost nothing.
Start with identity, not money
Passports, previous permits, name-change deeds and civil documents set the frame for everything else. If your surname appears three ways across five documents, every later claim inherits that doubt. Fix the identity chain first, then let the financial evidence sit on top of it.
Funds are a story, not a screenshot
A balance that meets the threshold on the day you apply proves very little. What persuades is provenance: six months of statements, salary or business income that explains the balance, and a short covering note for any deposit larger than a normal month’s income.
“A gift from a relative is fine. A gift from a relative with no letter, no source and no relationship evidence is a refusal waiting to be written.”
The four that cause most trouble
- ✓Translations without a translator’s certification, date and contact details.
- ✓Employment letters that state a role but not hours, salary or start date.
- ✓Police certificates ordered too early, so they expire before the decision.
- ✓Relationship evidence that starts the month you decided to apply.
Read the file as a stranger would
Before submission, put the bundle down for a day, then read it in the order a caseworker will. Every question that occurs to you will occur to them — and each one you answer in advance is a reason not to refuse.
